Overview

The Project

In order to sell his artwork and share his paintings, I created an ecommerce website for Daniel Sumner - The Blind Painter.

My Role

UX/UI Designer, User Researcher, Information Architect, Usability Testing Facilitator, Visual Designer

Tools Used

Figma, Miro, Zoom, Google Forms, ShareX

The Problem

Daniel is a local artist with lots to offer the world. He is passionate about painting blueprints of houses and would love to share this talent with others. Currently he has no platform for selling his existing paintings or receiving requests for custom paintings. He also has no way to share his story with others; the story of the blind painter.

The Audience

No items found.

The Solution

A website which allows users to filter through and purchase artwork, request custom paintings, and learn about the artist.

Research & Analysis

User Surveys & Interviews

I surveyed 22 people who buy art online and conducted post-survey interviews with 3 of them.

The 3 most important pieces of information users look for are

  • Artist Bio
  • Materials Used
  • Customer Reviews

The 3 greatest pains reported by users

  • Complex Checkout
  • Too Much Text
  • Not Enough Pictures Per Item

User Stories

Based upon research I created 3 user stories to direct the scope of the project. I refer to these stories throughout the rest of the design process.

  • As a customer, I want to be able to see the details of the commissions process so I know what to expect.
  • As a customer, I want to see the artwork available so that I can purchase my favorite ones.
  • As a customer, I want to know information about the artist so that I can feel connected to the artwork.

Persona

Keeping this persona in mind allows me to quickly refer back to the needs of the users.

Cassandra is a realtor based in Petaluma, California. She is passionate about finding custom gifts for her clients to celebrate their new homes.

She has embraced technology and prefers to shop online, however her eyesight has been worsening over the years. Sometimes it is hard for her to navigate eCommerce sites because there is too much to look at, too small of text, and too long of a checkout process.

Journey Map

Here I made a map of Cassandra's journey finding and using the website.

Branding

Usability Testing

I conducted usability testing on 5 users. The tasks/questions were designed to determine how users are able to navigate the website. The tasks were:

  • Walk me through how you would find information about the artist.
  • Take me through the process of learning about a specific painting.
  • You've added a painting to your cart, how would you edit your shipping address?
  • Walk me through the process of a getting a custom painting created by the artist.
  • How many featured paintings are on the home screen? (this was to test if users knew they could get back to the home screen by clicking the logo in the corner)
  • How much do you need to spend to get free shipping?
  • What is the artist's instagram handle?

All 5 testers completed each task successfully or provided accurate answers to the questions due to following the correct user flow.
